서강대학교는 유럽의 가톨릭 고등교육을 선도적으로 이끌어온 예수회 교육이념을 이 땅에 구현하기 위한 소명에 따라 설립되어, 지난 60년간 한국의 대학교육 발전에 크게 공헌해 왔습니다.

서강은 4Cs로 대표되는 예수회 교육 이념을 실천합니다. 첫째, 서강은 바른 양심(Conscience)을 가진 학문 공동체입니다. 둘째, 서강은 최선의 노력(Competence)으로 탁월한 연구 역량을 추구합니다. 셋째, 서강은 세상의 문제에 관해 공감(Compassion)하고 존중하며 진지하게 탐구합니다. 넷째, 서강은 남을 위한 삶, 더불어 사는 세상을 위해 봉사하고 헌신(Commitment)합니다. 이렇게 참된 인성과 덕성을 기반으로 하는 학문적 수월성을 추구해 온 서강은 그간 유능한 인재들을 많이 배출했습니다. 그 결과 온누리에서 서강 가족들이 국가와 세계 발전에 기여하고 있습니다.

서강 흘러 60년, 이제 우리는 새롭게 도전합니다. 제4차 산업혁명, 디지털 문화, 신산업 시대 등 미증유의 빠른 속도로 변화하는 세계의 파도와 당당하게 맞서 서강은 새로운 가능성의 항해를 시작합니다. 2021년 2월 1일 서강대학교의 제16대 총장으로 취임하며 저는, 서강의 재도약을 위한 희망의 돛을 높이 올리겠습니다. 역동적 수월성으로 진실하고 아름답고 선한 미래를 열어나가는 서강인들의 꿈이 실질적으로 영글어가는 대학, 가장 자랑스러운 서강이라는 푸른 진리의 난바다로 힘차게 나아가겠습니다. 서강의 미래를 향한 새로운 항해를 위해 다 같이 정성과 지혜를 모아 함께 하여 주시기를 간곡히 부탁드립니다. 우리 함께 하십시다. 우리는 할 수 있습니다.

Since its founding at the call to plant the education of the Society of Jesus in South Korea, which had previously led Catholic higher education in Europe, Sogang University has continued to make great contributions to the advancement of university education in Korea over the past 60 years.

Sogang implements the educational ideology of the Society of Jesus, represented by 4 C’s. First, Sogang is an academic community embracing right Conscience. Second, Sogang pursues distinguished research capabilities through the utmost Competence. Third, Sogang studies the problems of the world with Compassion, along with respect and sincerity. Fourth, Sogang serves and makes the Commitment to live for others and with the world, at large. Through its consistent pursuit of academic excellence based on true character and virtue, Sogang has fostered numerous competent talents. As a natural consequence, Sogang’s members continue to carry out the steps toward advancement for Korea and the world.

After 60 years of remarkable achievements, we are now moving on to new challenges. In the face of the unpredictably fast-paced changes brought on by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, digital culture, and the Era of New Industry, Sogang is setting out on a journey of new possibilities. With my inauguration as the 16th president of Sogang University on February 1, 2021, I will strive to hoist the sail of hope for Sogang’s renewed leap forward. For all members of Sogang who are utilizing their dynamic excellence to open the doors to a truthful, beautiful, and prosperous future, Sogang will serve as the grounds for their dreams to grow and ripen in order to form substantial fruit. I am proud to be setting out on this dynamic voyage across the open seas of blue truth with Sogang – a most honorable point of pride for you. You are all invited to join us on this new voyage for Sogang’s future, sharing your valuable efforts and wisdom along the way.
