그동안 우리는 상상할 수 없을 정도의 눈부신 발전을 이룩하고, 학교의 입지와 위상을 국내외적으로 탄탄히 세우는 데 성공했다고 감히 자부합니다. 이는 학교 행정을 책임지고 끌어 오신 분들께서 성심을 다해 노력하신 결과이자, 모든 원의 교수님들, 직원 선생님들, 캠퍼스 구석구석에서 묵묵히 학교 시설을 관리해 주신 분들, 그리고 우리 귀중한 학생들까지 혼연일체가 되어 달성한 귀중한 성과라고 생각합니다.
이제 21세기의 새로운 예술교육환경, 더욱 크게는 전혀 경험해 보지 못한 정치경제적, 사회문화적 환경으로부터의 압력에 직면한 상황 속에서, 초창기에 구축했던 교과과정, 입시제도, 교육행정 시스템 등을 개편함으로써 낯선 시대적 도전에 효율적으로 대응할 수 있는 “제2의 도약”을 시도할 때가 되었다고 확신합니다. 그리고 무엇보다도 초대 총장님께서 늘 강조하셨던 “눈에 보이는 커리큘럼보다는 눈에 안 보이는 커리큘럼의 중요성”을 분명히 파악하여, 그러한 중요성을 면밀하게 반영한 예술교육과 행정체계를 새롭게 구축하기 위해 모든 학교구성원이 긴밀하게, 또 자유롭게 소통하고 협력해야 한다고 믿습니다.
총장의 역할은 시대적 요구에 신속하게, 그리고 효율적으로 적응해야 합니다. 이 시점에 우리 학교가 요구하는 총장의 역할은 바로 소통과 상호 이해의 구심점으로서의 역할이라고 믿습니다. 저는 총장으로서 무엇보다도 먼저 우리 학교가 사제 간에, 또 교직원 간에 탄탄한 신뢰가 구축된 예술학교, 모든 교육과 행정 영역에 있어서 조화와 균형이 달성된 아름다운 예술학교를 모습을 갖출 수 있도록 혼신의 노력을 기울이겠습니다. 재능이 넘치는 우리 학생들의 예술적 혼과 능력을 최대한 끌어내는 학교, 말 그대로 “제대로 예술하는 예술학교”를 만들어 내는 것이 바로 목표입니다.

Responding to the Challenges of the 21st Century
Allow me to declare, with pride, that we have successfully made remarkable achievement in establishing the solid academic position of the Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts) both domestically and internationally, thereby reaching the apex of success over the years. Our success, without doubt, is the outcome of the concerted efforts of administrative staff, faculty, and students, not to mention those who have faithfully managed everyday life of the campus.
Facing the imminent challenges from a rapidly changing environment of arts education in the 21st century, and unanticipated shifts in political, economic and sociocultural landscapes of the new millennium, I assert with confidence that now is the right moment to take the second leap.
The second leap would allow us to respond effectively to the unprecedented challenges by constantly updating the conventional curriculum as well as the admission and administrative systems. Above all, the renewed academic and administrative endeavors must place special emphasis on the importance of the hidden curriculum, which was repeatedly proposed by our late President Lee Kang Sook. In this context, every member of K-Arts is expected to cooperate with each other closely, on the basis of free and creative communication, for the purpose of establishing the new system of education and administration.
My role as President requires rapid responses to the demands of the time. I believe I am here to serve as a pivot of communication and mutual understanding. During the entirety of my term in office, I will do my utmost to promote balance and harmony in all aspects of education and administration, based on the solid trust between students and teachers, as well as among the school personnel. My goal is to encourage our highly talented students to realize their full artistic potential. K-Arts, in short, will become ‘an arts school in its truest sense.’
